He was being compared to Manchester United legends but has fallen off dramatically

As Manchester United is the biggest club in England, every time a player starts doing well and performing over his expectations, they start to compare him with legends that played for the Red Devils because that is the highest level you could reach for.

This was the case with Liverpool’s centre-back Virgil Van Dijk, who became their most expensive defender back in 2017 when they bought it from Southampton for a fee of €84 million as he was really the backbone of that Saints team for a long time.

The Dutch defender really made an impact with the Anfield side, establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and the world. However, Liverpool fans started to say he was the best in the world and compare him to several legends.

Some of the comparisons started to get out of hand when their fans started to claim that he was better than Manchester United legends like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jaap Stam, and others. They also said he was better than Sergio Ramos, or John Terry, who are also legends of the sport.

The downfall

Virgin Van Dijk has had a couple of really good seasons to be fair, but he was never among some of the legends he was being compared to by Liverpool fans who were delusional. This season he has been one of their worst players and his fans are also starting to turn on him after his poor performances and bad attitude. He’ll soon be back playing for a team like Southampton.
