It is no secret that the vast majority of Manchester United fans want the club to be sold as soon as possible with the anti-Glazer campaign increasingly growing in the past few years after the club continues to decline without any sign of getting better. There have been several protests from fans outside Old Trafford demanding the family to leave.
To this, yesterday night, Elon Musk went on Twitter and decided to tweet something about politics: “To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!”. Following this, he tweeted his intention of buying the club: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome”.

As expected, this tweet went viral and got over 95.800 Retweets, 586,000 Likes, and tons of replies from Manchester United fans around the world, who were excited by the idea of getting the richest man in the world as their new owner. The tweet also boosted the club’s shares by nearly 17% to $14.90 in the US pre-market trade, before settling at $13.20.
However, when a lot of supporters asked the billionaire if he was being serious about buying the club from the Glazers, he did confirm that he was only joking but said didn’t close up to the possibility of doing it in the future: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams”. He later tweeted: “Although, if it were any team it would be Man U. They were my favorite as a kid”.
After all that happened yesterday with the 51-year-old Tesla owner boosting the Manchester United shares by 17%, the Glazer family will not sell the club in the near future. They aren’t worried about possible interest from Elon Musk in buying the club as they know he was only joking. It is expected that Man United fans make another protest during the Liverpool game next weekend.
