Antonio Cassano has called on Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo to retire from football, saying the Portugal international is no longer the "phenomenon" he once was. Cassano, who played with Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2009 and 2010, believes the 37-year-old's days at the top are behind him.
Antonio Cassano has had a long and storied career in professional football, and he's now calling for one of his former rivals to hang up his boots. In an interview with the Italian press, Cassano said that he believes Cristiano Ronaldo should retire, citing the Portuguese star's recent benching in Manchester United.
Who will be the starting striker for the Red Devils against Manchester City?
Man. Utd. insist in de Jong, this is what ten Hag will do to get him in 2023
Although Cassano was never able to achieve the same level of success as their contemporaries Lionel Messi or even Cristiano Ronaldo himself, Cassano was considered among the best players of his generation. Now, at the age of 37, Ronaldo is showing signs of slowing down and Cassano believes it's time for him to retire while he's still at the top of his game.
After Portugal's elimination from the Nations League, Cassano's words were even harsher than we might think. "At this point, Cristiano should do himself a favor and understand that if you don't reach a certain level, you should close the shop," he said to the Italian press. "He won everything, he was a phenomenon, but stop. You have to stop or you'll only run into the bench."
