Manchester United defender Raphael Varane was the latest player of the squad to be selected for a Q&A with the supporters for the club media. The French defender answered some of the most frequently asked questions that the fans have about him since he was signed from Real Madrid a year ago for €40 million.

One of the first questions was about why he chose his current shirt number when he first arrived at the club last summer, to which he answered: “The number 19 was my first number when I arrived in Real Madrid, so I wanted to do the same thing in another club”. When he was signed all other numbers were occupied at the time. Now that Eric Bailly left, he might take his number 3.

When Varane was asked about which retired Manchester United player would he like to play, he answered his fellow countryman Laurent Blanc, who is considered by many as one of the best centre-backs in football history: “I would like to say maybe Laurent Blanc because he’s a French defender, like me, and a great player”, he told MUTV.

Lastly, the 29-year-old defender was questioned about what he believes makes Manchester United such a unique and special club. Raphaël said that a big part of that is the club’s huge fanbase all around the world: “I think Old Trafford, it’s special. I think the fans are amazing. We feel the support all the time and everywhere in the world”.

A season of redemption

Raphaël Varane is loving life at the moment at Manchester United since he has been starting in the last two games alongside Lisandro Martinez in what could be the newest centre-back partnership in Old Trafford. After a tough first season full of injuries, the Frenchman had a special training program during pre-season and he is now looking better than ever, so hopefully, he can stay fit for a while.
