The internal matter involving Marcus Rashford might have come to an end, but it hasn't solved the external matter of whether or not Manchester United would be wise to sell him this summer. Rashford reached a genuine world-class peak last season and has regressed during this one. As a home-grown player, he faces a lot more pressure than many of his teammates, but pressure is a privilege, and it should be embraced.

Michael Olise could help prove Sir Jim Ratcliffe's value with Manchester United

The social media revealed on Wednesday that some players are concerned that Rashford has become demotivated amid his spiral this season, with sections of the dressing room feeling the forward is drifting through games. It could be the perfect motivation Rashford needs to prove his doubters wrong in two tough tests this week, though his meagre record of just four goals this season perhaps makes that wishful thinking.

No matter what happens next, there is a compelling argument to suggest United should look to cash in on the 26-year-old in the summer window and reinvest it elsewhere. United would greatly benefit from selling academy products this summer because the current FFP rules effectively encourage it due to the fact that all the money received is classified as profit on the balance sheets. It is not the case for players who have been previously signed and then sold on, with Rashford still arguably the player who could be sold for the biggest profit this summer.

If they are to even consider it, though, they will need a contingency plan in place. Rashford is not only a Premier League star but remains one of the most marketable players in world football. Both of those aspects are important to a club of United's stature. Crystal Palace star Michael Olise is one of the most eligible candidates and would check a lot of the boxes for what they are looking for in the summer. The 22-year-old has scored six goals and notched three assists in just ten appearances so far this season and is already proven in the Premier League. He has shone as part of a lacklustre Palace side and could take his game to a whole new level at a club like United.

Not the first time, Man United has been aware of Rashford's problems for years

Problems on the road

There is one small issue, though. Rashford plays on the left and Olise plays on the right. It means that if United did sign the Palace star this summer, then Alejandro Garnacho would need to move back to the left wing and would likely need some support in that position as well. United have long been overstocked for left wing talent in recent years, but if they were to sell Rashford and Anthony Martial this summer, then they would be left with only Garnacho in that role. Olise would be a welcome addition to the United attack but if they sell Rashford, then they might well need to sign another forward as well.
