While it was reported a week ago before the Brentford match, Manchester United were looking for a backup goalkeeper that could play the games that weren’t too relevant since Dean Henderson left for Nottingham Forest on loan, where he has made some unfortunate comments about the Red Devils, so he might never come back again.
However, last weekend David De Gea made two shocking mistakes against the Bees that ended up in a humiliating 4-0 defeat away from home. As a consequence, Erik ten Hag and the club are now looking for a goalkeeper who could start in front of the Spanish keeper who now looks like he just lost all of his confidence.

Today, Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United are now interested in Yann Sommer as he is one of the three options on their shortlist. The Swiss goalie’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 but his current club Borussia Monchengladbach just offered him a renewal until 2025. He is now analyzing his options as he has attracted the interest of other Premier League clubs.
The 33-year-old Switzerland goalkeeper has played for Monchengladbach since 2014 where he has become one of the best players in the world in his position despite not being that tall for a keeper. At 1.83 m of height, he has some of the best reflexes in the game and he proved it last summer at the Euros where he had an amazing performance throughout the tournament.
There are a lot of Manchester United fans who believe David De Gea should remain the number one option for the team in goal, but there are also tons of fans who argue that his time has passed. Yann Sommer would be the perfect signing because he wouldn’t start ahead of De Gea right away, but he could eventually be the first-choice keeper and provide competition for the 31-year-old.
