Last week, following the first defeat of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion at home on the opening match of the Premier League, Manchester United reached an agreement with Juventus for the signing of Adrien Rabiot for a fee of around £20 million with add-ons included as they desperately needed a new midfielder.

However, the club couldn’t reach an agreement on personal terms with the player and his mother, who also happens to be his mother. The Red Devils held several conversations with the French centre-midfielder and his camp, but his high wages were always the main problem. It was also reported that Rabiot was unsure of the club’s project since they will not play in the Champions League this season.

Man United was very keen on trying this transfer to go through. Erik ten Hag even called the player personally in order to convince him that he would play an important role in his system, but that didn’t work. In addition, the club’s football director John Murtough flew to Turin and had a meeting with the French footballer and his mother, but came back empty-handed.

Today, the Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano said that Juventus have received a message from Manchester United saying that the Adrien Rabiot deal is completely off and that their position won’t change unless something crazy happens on the player side. Romano also claims that the English giants have no intention of paying him a record salary.

Rabiot and his demands

The Red Devils' board did well in not giving the 27-year-old midfielder the wages he was asking for. Although the club was reportedly ready to make him one of the highest earners in the squad, they wouldn’t accept the over €7 million net wages per season he wanted. His mother/agent also wanted a huge signing bonus. The club is already looking for new alternatives.
