After the first two games of the Premier League season, Erik ten Hag has realized that his current squad is not good enough to play for Manchester United and display the kind of football he likes and wants to play. But the position he thinks needs more players as soon as possible is the centre-midfield area.

For the last two years, the midfield duo of Fred and McTominay have been the regular starters without really any competition. However, the new manager wants to change that by signing two or three players if possible in that defensive midfielder position. He has targeted Frenkie De Jong, Adrien Rabiot, Moisés Caicedo, and lastly Casemiro.

First, De Jong was the main target for the former Ajax coach, but after the Red Devils reached an agreement with Barcelona for the player, the 25-year-old refused to leave. Then they made a move for Adrien Rabiot and also agreed on a fee with Juventus, but once again, they couldn’t reach a personal agreement with the player due to his high demands regarding his salary.

Now it is being reported that United has shown interest in Moisés Caicedo, but Brighton has been very clear in saying that the young Ecuadorian is not for sale. The other new alternative is Casemiro. However, the player is very happy at Real Madrid and wants to stay in the Spain capital, where he just won the Champions League last season.

Time to move on

There is no time to lose for United since the transfer market closes in less than three weeks. The club should just forget about Frenkie De Jong and Rabiot to focus on new players available. Weeks ago, Sergej Milinković-Savić was reportedly an option for the Red Devils, but they chose Rabiot instead. Now they should make a bid for him and try to sign him before the Liverpool match.
