The reason why Antony won’t be wearing the number 11 at Manchester United

Manchester United finally announced what number their newest signing Antony will be wearing this season and it is not the number 11 as every fan thought and expected him to be. The 22-year-old winger will wear the number 21 on the back of his shirt for the remaining of the season as Edinson Cavani left this summer and that number was available.

This comes as a surprise because the number 11 isn’t currently occupied by someone in the squad since Mason Greenwood was separated from the team back in January. Also, Antony was Ajax’s number 11 last season and has used it in the past with Brazil’s national team and Sao Paulo. For that reason, it made sense that he would wear that number.

Let's not forget that Greenwood hasn’t been part of the team ever since he was accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend and even was arrested by Manchester police back in January of this year. His trial is yet to happen as Manchester United marginated him from the team for an indefinite time and has not trained or played ever since.

Nevertheless, Antony will be wearing the number 21 on the back of his shirt and won’t give it any more importance than it deserves. At the end of the day, it’s just a number and has no effect on the player’s performance on the pitch, and as the famous saying goes, the number does not make the player, but the player makes the number.

The Red Devils are waiting for him

After this was confirmed, it looks like the Manchester United board is waiting for Mason Greenwood’s situation to fade away as his trial is yet to confirm if he is guilty or not. He hasn’t been part of the team since the beginning of the year and they have all missed him on the pitch because he was one of the most promising stars in world football. However, the club is still hopeful that he'll be back.
