Manchester United defeated Liverpool last night to get their first win of the Premier League season. This was also Erik ten Hag’s first victory as manager of the Red Devils, who made quite a few changes to the team sheet coming from last weekend’s humiliating defeat against Brentford. One of those adjustments was Tyrell Malacia taking Luke Shaw’s place at left-back.

The England defender started in the first two fixtures and was one of the worst players in the defeat away at Brentford. Erik ten Hag debuted Malacia in the second half of that match and he was one of the only players that played well. Last night he decided to start him over Shaw, and he had an amazing game against one of the best teams in the world.

After that performance, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand praised the 22-year-old left-back and even compared him with one of his former teammates: “He reminds me of Patrice Evra in many ways. He’s athletic, he looks like a pound-for-pound strong kid. There aren’t many left-backs in football in the last four or five years who have gone out of a game and kept Mohamed Salah quiet”.

“Yes, he scored a little goal but in the main of the game, he kept him quiet. Salah would've come off that pitch thinking that was a tough competitor. Whenever he did get past him the odd time in the game he has the pace to cover and get back. I thought in all elements of his game, even on the ball, he’s so calm and composed”, he added.

Luke Shaw has a problem

Ferdinand also believes Luke Shaw will have to change something in his game to try and get back on the team. The former Feyenoord player who was brought by Erik ten Hag this summer will most likely start in the next matches since he left a good impression on every single Manchester United fan and of course, the manager.
