Less than a day away from his first game as the new Manchester United manager at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag talked about Raphaël Varane’s chances of playing this year as he was one of the most expensive players that was signed last year. The French centre-back left Real Madrid to try a new adventure in his career, but it has not gone as planned.

The new manager was asked if the best is still to come from Varane, to which he replied: 100 per cent. I am convinced of that. During pre-season we built a really careful and individual training plan that in the las three weeks he has been involved in every session on the pitch”.

The four-time Champions League winner looks like he could find redemption with the club after a complicated first campaign at the Premier League. Ten Hag added: “You see him growing, his fitness levels and also his performance levels too. I am happy about that as at the moment. Raphe will be fit, and it is a huge boost for both the squad and the team”.

Raphaël Varane has won everything throughout his career. He will be remembered by Real Madrid fans after winning four Champions League titles with them. He also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup as a crucial part of the France team. However, after signing with Manchester United las summer, he seems to be carrying with some fitness issues as he only played 28 games of the 47 possible matches last season.
