Last night Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez played their first official match together and they absolutely tore the house down. The French and the Argentinian performed a masterclass on defending against one of the best teams in the world, Liverpool. After the final whistle, Varane spoke to Simon Peach from PA Media about his post-match feelings.

The former Real Madrid defender believes that last night was one of his best moments since arriving at Old Trafford a year ago: “I really enjoyed on the pitch, the atmosphere, the spirit of the team. I came to England to feel these emotions after everything I left in Madrid, and this feeling was amazing. Absolutely amazing”.

The 29-year-old obviously had to speak about his new partner in the middle of defense last night Lisandro Martínez: “He brings to the team his determination, his motivation, and he has the mentality, this fighting spirit. He showed it tonight”, he told PA. Hopefully, this is the start of a new centre-back partnership that could be remembered in years to come.

Lastly, Varane claims that he is in great shape after struggling with injuries: “I feel very good. I was ready for the start of the season, but I didn’t start so I had more time to keep building my fitness. We know how demanding the Premier League is, so I work a lot to be fit, to be ready. I have demonstrated in the past what I can do when I’m fit, so that’s my focus for this season”.

New season, new Varane

Last season, Raphael Varane signed with Manchester United from Real Madrid and everyone thought he would make an impact as he is one of the best defenders in the world. However, things didn’t go according to plan due to injuries. The Frenchman only played 29 games in his first campaign in England and missed 17 matches. Now he feels better than ever and looks motivated to help the team.
