When Manchester United announced Erik Ten Hag as their new manager in the summer, there was a gloomy feeling of a total player overhaul expected at Old Trafford. A host of players did leave but quite a number of them stayed, especially those who still had a lot to prove to the club and their fans. The likes of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, and Marcus Rashford were pointed out to become a key part of Ten Hag’s rebuild and it has been true as predicted.
Yet United still sort after key players for several teams across Europe with the likes of Antony, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and most notably, the shock summer signing of Real Madrid legend Casemiro late in the window. The news of such a marquee signing took centre stage across social media and football conversation with many dumbfounded and puzzled as to why a guaranteed Champions league player would move to a rebuilding United.
Not Cristiano, the star player who will have a chance to prove Erik Ten Hag wrong
Despite the good form, the problem that worried Erik Ten Hag ahead of the Europa League clash
The signing was a huge statement of the club’s board’s desire to back Erick Ten Hag in leading United back to its illustrious glory days. As expected, the signing was also a huge boost for the players as well with more quality being added to the newly created setup. Everything seemed so fine at the early stages but the Brazilian holding midfielder hasn’t been a consistent starter for his new team with eight appearances so far in Premier League, and four as a sub.
His late goal against Chelsea was a clear reminder of his brilliance and resilient style of play which made him one of the most crucial parts of Real Madrid’s four UEFA Champions League title run in five years. The bullish nature of his play and the never give up ideology imbued in him during his time at Madrid were one of the key factors in United’s decision to sign him in the summer.
It is surely expected that his equalizer against Chelsea late in the game, when united looked like they had lost, while be playing repeatedly at the back of Ten Hag’s mind. The quality of the player is undeniable and is expected to be an important part of Brazil’s target at the coming World Cup. Ten Hag will have to critically consider giving Casemiro more game time, which will benefit both player and club in the coming weeks.
