Manchester United is gradually adapting to the Erik Ten Hag pressing-infused attacking football with a run of decent results so far against top-six opposition. United have so far beaten the likes of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Mikel Arteta’s young exciting Arsenal team, Antonio Conte’s rigid Spurs team, and most recently an enthralling 1-1 draw with Chelsea. They have only been humbled by the reigning Premier League champions at the Etihad earlier this month.
The scintillating and pulsating attacking football that Ten Hag is known for has lit the flames of passion in doubtful fans so, as they clamor for more of it on a consistent level despite the early stages of his team rebuild. The summer signing Antony has shown glimpses of his Brazilian tricky with Martial and Rashford finding their scoring boots again. Christian Eriksen has also impressed with the can of magic the was signed to create.
People said he was too short, but he leads the league in this statistical category
Not Cristiano, the star player who will have a chance to prove Erik Ten Hag wrong
The backline setup was partly shaky at the start of the season but has transformed immensely, one match after the other, with summer signing Lisandro Martinez leading the adaption of Ten Hag style at the back. Lisandro has spent most of the backline being paired with World Cup winner Raphael Varane, who was recently injured in the Chelsea game. The pair has kept four clean sheets so far and have resilience in killing off much-needed games for United.
Davide De Gea has had one or two howler moments under his new manager but he remains the trusted hand behind the sticks for United, with Martin Dubravka very unlikely to prove a challenge for the Spaniard. De Gea has four clean sheets so far this season and will be looking to add more to his tally with 27 saves from 11 appearances.
Although he has done much rotation in recent matches, Ten Hag will be expected to consider doing so in the next six matches before the World Cup. With many national team starters on the bench, the tactical headaches for more game times ahead of the World Cup by these players will be a stern test of Ten Hag’s tactical prowess, especially as they certainly want the top spot in their Europa League group.
