After it was reported that Manchester United were closing the signing of Carlos Henrique Casemiro from Real Madrid, the former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher took the opportunity to share his opinion about the Red Devils' transfer strategy during this summer transfer window in his Telegraph column.

He claims that MUFC went for Rabiot without doing their homework: “Just look at the Adrien Rabiot deal, which collapsed this week due to the player’s wage demands. If you are a club like United, you should not be pulling out of transfers due to wage demands. Someone at the club should already know what sort of salary the player wants, long before it reaches this point”.

Carragher believes the club is just choosing new random targets as the days go by: “They have also spent weeks chasing Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong, and now they are running around trying to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid. From De Jong to Rabiot, to Casemiro. They are all different styles and ages. What is the plan here? It’s embarrassing. It’s like watching Supermarket Sweep”.

“Erik ten Hag will want his own players, of course, and so far this summer United have backed him in the moves for Lisandro Martínez and Tyrell Malacia. I understand that because it is hard to say no to a new manager when he has just been appointed, but the desperation at this stage of the transfer window is another sign of the problems within the club”.

The transfer strategy has been bad

Whether Manchester United fans like it or not, Jamie Carragher is right. It’s not possible that a club as big as United spent all summer waiting for Frenkie De Jong, to then try to sign Adrien Rabiot and fail due to his wages, to finally going all-out for Casemiro. No one understands how Rabiot is an option before someone like Casemiro, who is the best player in the world in his position.
