The hamstring injury of Anthony Martial last Thursday has changed the landscape of Manchester United’s attack. Even though the club is still confident that Cristiano Ronaldo will stay this season after not finding a new club, Erik ten Hag realized that with Martial not being available, he only has Ronaldo in the striker position.

This has caused Manchester United to go on the market and search for a new centre-forward. The Red Devils’ first option was Bologna’s Marko Arnautović, but they quickly moved on after the Italian side rejected the first bid, and because of all of the social media backlash from the fans that didn’t want the Austrian at the club.

Erik ten Hag added Cody Gakpo to the short-list last week as he already knows him back when the manager was at Ajax. He saw Gakpo up close when they faced PSV Eindhoven and discovered that he can play in both wings and can even play in the “No. 9” role. This could be the perfect signing for the team because he is very versatile and could cover multiple positions on the field.

The problem that stops the transfer

Manchester United representatives watched very closely last Tuesday’s match between AS Monaco and PSV in the previous rounds of the Champions League because Gakpo has been told by his club that he would only be sold if they fail to qualify for the group stages. The Dutch club is now just one step away from reaching their objective and will face Glasgow Rangers in the last round of the playoffs.
