Harry Maguire explains what went wrong in the defeat against Brighton

Manchester United lost 1-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in their opening game of the Premier League season. There was a lot of enthusiasm before the game for what the fans had seen of the team throughout the pre-season tour since the appointment of Erik ten Hag as the new manager. Sadly, his new era has begun with the left foot.

After the match, the team’s captain Harry Maguire spoke to Shamoon Hafez, from BBC Sport was self-critical about him and his teammates: “The first goal knocked us back very badly and stopped playing. We have to be better on the ball and 2-0 down at half time was a nightmare start”.

He also talked about his new partner in the back: “Me and Licha (Martínez) have not played much together and we are not on the same wavelength at times. I am sure we will get better and keep clean sheets”. He finalized by saying that they have to work on avoiding conceding first as that was one of the biggest problems last year.

Harry Maguire will be the team’s captain for another year

The England centre-back was signed by Manchester United from Leicester City back in 2019 for a record fee of €87m, becoming the most expensive defender of all time. Added to this, he was named captain since his arrival. Last year he suffered a lot of criticism because of his bad form. This season he hopes to show his best version alongside Varane and Martínez.
