Ever since Erik ten Hag was appointed as Manchester United manager back in April, one of the first players that came to everyone’s mind as a possible signing was Fenkie De Jong. After it was announced that both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matić were leaving this summer as free agents, De Jong has been confirmed as the club’s number one transfer target.

Sadly, the signing has not materialized even though Manchester United reached an agreement with FC Barcelona for the transfer over a month and a half ago for a fee of around £75 million. The player himself rejected the move because he wanted to stay and fulfill his contract. In addition, the club owes him some differed wages.

Last week, Chelsea joined the race for the Dutch midfielder, but it looks like they will sign him in the near future. According to Gerard Romero, who is one of the most reliable sources of Barcelona, The Blues are doing everything in their power to seal the deal with Barça but are yet to reach an agreement for both club and player.

Chelsea are ahead of Manchester United

Last week several sources all agreed that Frenkie De Jong would choose Chelsea over Manchester United because he wants to play in the UEFA Champions League, in which the Red Devils do not compete this season. In spite of this, his first choice has always been to stay in Barcelona, but the club really wants to sell him and if the Stamford Bridge side makes a better offer, then is game over for Erik ten Hag’s side.
