Manchester United suffered today one of their most embarrassing defeats in recent memory after losing 4-0 against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Red Devils have conceded six goals and have not scored yet in the first two games of the Premier League campaign. It looks like it could be another season destined for failure.

One of today’s protagonists was Man United goalkeeper David De Gea, but sadly, not in a good way how everyone would have hoped for. The Spanish keeper made two mistakes that directly caused the first two goals that made the Bees take the lead. After these two goals in the spare time of eight minutes, the visitors’ players disconnected from the game.

For that reason, De Gea personally asked to do the post-match interview with Sky Sports and was very self-critic with himself: “I cost three points to my team today and it was a poor performance from myself. It was a horrible day. We should react better. I should save the first shot and the result would be different. Sometimes I may have to read the game better and go long”.

If these mistakes could not have come at a worse time for the 31-year-old goalie, just yesterday it was reported by ‘The Athletic’ that Erik ten Hag would like someone who can challenge him under the posts. However, the budget they were thinking to invest in this position was only £7 million. But after today’s match, maybe that budget is increased dramatically.

Possible alternatives

Earlier today it was reported by Jonathan Shrager and ‘SportsBible’ that Southampton’s goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was o Manchester United’s shortlist of understudy goalkeepers. Even though he has plenty of experience in the Premier League, the 32-year-old couldn’t be considered as serious competition for David De Gea.
