Probably the only bad thing coming out of last night's victory against Liverpool is the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo was benched again. Cristiano looked really angry sitting on the bench until he entered the pitch. Bruno Fernandes was interviewed after the final whistle by Portuguese media Eleven Sports, where he talked about his fellow countryman.
When asked about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, he teased that he might already know his decision and said that only Ronaldo will tell: “There is a lot of speculation. I may know one thing or another, but I won’t be the one who will say it. For now, he is a United player, I don’t know about his future, if he is going to leave or if he won’t leave. He will speak soon”.
Erik ten Hag's first impressions from tonight’s victory against Liverpool
Casemiro says his first words as a Manchester United player from Old Trafford
However, he reiterated that the squad wants CR7 to stay, but he did say that as a Portuguese, he wants him to be fit and ready for the World Cup in November: “We want Cristiano Ronaldo to stay. If Cristiano thinks it is best for him to leave, I will be happy for him because the most important thing is that he is at the highest level and making our country proud”.
The 37-year-old striker has started from the bench in two out of the first three fixtures of the Premier League season. Today, Erik ten Hag chose Anthony Elanga and Anthony Martial over him to play. It looks like Ronaldo has lost his place in the starting XI because he was subbed in until the 86th minute against one of the best teams in the world Liverpool.
Erik ten Hag clearly wasn’t happy with the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo skipped the whole pre-season tour with him and the rest of his teammates because he was looking for a new team that will play in this year’s Champions League. After failing to do so, he had to return to Manchester United for the start of the season but he still wants to leave at all costs after losing his place in the team.
