As it was reported yesterday by David Ornstein from ‘The Athletic’, Chelsea have now joined the race for Frenkie De Jong as they are trying to hijack the transfer from Manchester United. At the moment, there is still not any agreement, but numerous sources have agreed that Chelsea might be close to seal the deal.
It should be noted that ‘The Red Devils’ and Barcelona reached an agreement for the transfer of Dutch midfielder back in June in exchange of 85 million euros, but the player refused to leave as the Spanish club still owned him a big amount of his wages. Since then, United have been waiting for the player to change his mind.

Today, Chris Wheeler and Tom Collomosse, from ‘Daily Mail’, reported that both Manchester United and Chelsea, are prepared to pay De Jong the £17million of differed wages that Barcelona still owe him. However, Ornstein claims that the player would prefer a move to the London side because of Champions League football.
Despite all this talk, Manchester United stay optimistic that the player will eventually end up playing at Old Trafford, as reported by Chief football writer from ‘The Independent’, Miguel Delaney. He mentions that the club believes that Frenkie’s relationship with ten Hag and his understanding of the philosophy will influence his decision.
Barcelona’s newspaper, SPORT, also confirmed that Chelsea have offered De Jong the payment of his differed wages. At the same time, Nizaar Kinsella, from Standart Sport informed that Barça offered Chelsea Memphis Depay, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Frenkie De Jong, as they are trying to sell players to be able to register their new signings.
