Manchester United's top goalscorer in history took the time yesterday while talking to Times Sport and recommended a few things to Erik ten Hag ahead of their next Premier League match, which will be against Liverpool on Monday. The Red Devils still haven’t won any game after the first two fixtures of the season, and Rooney believes he knows why.
The former England and Manchester United striker thinks both players haven’t been spreading good energy on the field and have their mind on other things: “Against Liverpool, I wouldn’t play Cristiano Ronaldo, and I wouldn’t play Marcus Rashford. If I was in Erik ten Hag’s position my main concern would be getting energy on the pitch”.
Marcus Rashford says he likes Erik ten Hag's philosophy
The main reason that’s stopping Yann Sommer to sign with Manchester United
The DC United manager feels like Cristiano Ronaldo still isn’t match fit to be a starter after missing pre-season: “Manchester United’s failure to recruit a number 9 means they relied on Ronaldo against Brentford, even though he hadn’t trained a lot with the team. He looked like he needs time to get match fit”. In recent weeks, he has also said that he should go.
When referring to Rashford, he seems worried about this former teammate: “I think Marcus needs to do a lot of soul-searching and figure out what he wants, for his own good. Watching him is a real concern; he looks like he wants to be anywhere but on a football pitch. I haven’t seen him smile on the field for a long time”.
Lastly, he thinks Rashford should seek help: “I’m coming from a place of wanting the best for him. He needs to look at himself and ten Hag and the coaches need to figure out what is going on, sit him down, and have really honest conversations because you can’t just keep rolling him out when clearly something is not right”.
