Last Monday night when Manchester United faced Liverpool, Erik ten Hag decided to make four adjustments in the starting XI. One of them was the inclusion of Tyrell Malacia ahead of Luke Shaw in the left-back position. Despite that being the young 22-year-old Dutch defender's first start with the Red Devils shirt, he was one of the best players on the field.

Following the match, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand compared Malacia’s performance with his former teammate Patrice Evra. Today, Man United media interviewed the defender and asked him his opinion on that: “It’s the first time hearing it because I don’t watch the media, but it’s a big compliment. I’m honored to get this compliment from them”.

The club’s media also asked Malacia about Lisandro Martinez, with whom he played on the left-hand side of the defense in the last match: “We speak a lot with each other about football and he’s a good guy. He is a great defender and gives us good energy, you saw that against Liverpool also, so yeah, I love to work with him”.

The former Feyenoord player says he likes to lead by example by doing his job in the left-back position and helping the team recover the ball: “It’s all with the mentality. That’s where it all starts. You start playing football but, first, you have to start with winning your duels. You have to give everything and that’s what we need”, he told MUTV.

He got his reward

After his amazing performance against Mohamed Salah in the last match, Erik ten Hag has decided to keep him in the starting eleven in today’s fixture against Southampton. Hopefully, he has another great game and continues to gain confidence so he can become a regular starter for Manchester United in years to come.
