It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Manchester United were interested in Chelsea’s target Pierre-Emerick Aubamenyang, but the club never really made a move for the striker. However, after Anthony Martial’s most recent injury, Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff could now try to hijack that operation to the Blues, as per Sky Sports News and Di Marzio.

During yesterday’s press conference ahead of their fixture against Southampton today, Manchester United’s manager confirmed that Martial isn’t available for the game since he suffered another injury. The French striker had just returned for the Liverpool game, where he played 45 minutes and made an assist. Now he got a new injury in his Achilles, which could be serious.

By this point, the Dutch manager would have expected to have Antony Matheus at his disposal but Ajax have been so keen on retaining him that they have turned down all proposals from the English giants. Yesterday, they even rejected a €90 million bid, which would have made the player the most expensive transfer from Eredivise in history.

In addition to that, Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain, so Erik ten Hag really wants to sign a new striker that could also play down the wing. This is the case with Aubameyang, who has experience in the Premier League during his time at Arsenal. He also just had some great six months in Barcelona, who are only trying to sell him because of their economic problems.

Chelsea’s transfer target

The Blues have been trying to sign Aubameyang for almost a month now, but Barcelona will only accept €30m for the 33-year-old striker. Thomas Tuchel and company have tried to offer some money plus Marcos Alonso, who’s actually a target for Barca, but they only want €30m to sell the player. Despite what is being reported, it doesn’t look likely United will pay that much money for another striker over the age of 30.
