Erik ten Hag currently has more than six center-backs at his disposal ahead of Manchester United first game of the Premier League season when they will clash against Brighton & Hove Albion this Sunday. At the moment no one has his place secured in the starting eleven, so there has been a lot of speculations regarding the decision of the new coach.

The 52-year-old manager must choose from Harry Maguire, Raphaël Varane, Lisandro Martínez, Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and youngster Teden Mengi.  According to Guillermo Rai, from Diario AS, newcomer Lisandro Martínez will be the chosen one to start alongside the club’s captain Maguire.

This centre-back partnership actually makes a lot of sense because they could complement each other as they seem to be opposite poles. In one hand, Maguire is a strong and stiff defender with a lot of aerial presence. On the other hand, Lisandro is quite short for a defensive player, however, he reads the game well and is really technical with the ball on his feet.

Centre-backs on their way out

The list of defenders could be shortened in the last weeks of the transfer window after multiple reports saying that the club is looking for the exit of Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones. At the moment, Bailly has been linked with AS Roma and Sevilla; while Phil Jones could be leaving to the MLS as Wayne Rooney wants him at DC United.
