Ever since he was appointed as Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag has made it clear that his top transfer target is Frenkie De Jong. The club made an effort and reached an agreement with FC Barcelona over a month ago, but the player has refused to leave Barça because they owe him some differed wages and he still has years left in his contract.
The Spanish side is desperate to sell him in order to solve their financial issues, but the midfielder hasn’t given in to the pressure meanwhile the Red Devils are waiting for him to change his mind. This has caused the club to focus solely on the 25-year-old footballer and completely forget about signing in players in other positions on the field.

Thomas Frank has revealed the tactic that helped his team beat Manchester United
The situation has angered Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who spoke his mind when he was invited to the ‘Vibe with Five podcast’: “We’re going out there and we’re waiting for three and a half months to sign Frenkie De Jong. With all due respect, he’s a great player, but we’re almost whoring ourselves for this player with our cap in hand begging”.
The ex-defender said he thinks great managers would have moved on already to other players after being rejected: “How are we putting ourselves to be in a position like that? Do you think Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola or Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho would be following around a player like this? They wouldn’t be doing that”.
Ferdinand is rightfully angry. After being only focused on De Jong, the club has forgotten to reinforce other areas and even the middle of the field. Now that they've realized that the midfield players in the squad are not good enough, they are trying to close Adrien Rabiot, who isn’t exactly one of the best players in the world.
