Today marks the one-year anniversary of Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United. On August 31st of 2021, the Portuguese striker left Juventus after three years with the Italian club. The Red Devils and the Bianconeri reached an agreement for the transfer on a fee of around €15 million. He was really close to join Manchester City, but Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjær convinced him to return.

The re-signing of Ronaldo had all Manchester United fans excited after the team finished second in the Premier League table the season before, just behind Manchester City. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan because the team struggled and went into a crisis on the field, which caused the manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær to get sacked in November.

Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim coach, but the team didn’t change as much and Man United finished sixth in the Premier League table. Despite all this, Cristiano Ronaldo still managed to score 24 goals across all competitions which made him get recognized by his teammates as the best player of the season after voting for him to win the Sir Matt Busby award.

This was the fourth time that the 37-year-old won that award at Manchester United, tying David De Gea as the players who have won this trophy most times. The first three times Ronaldo was named United’s player of the season was during his first spell at the club, when he won it in 2004, 2007, and 2008.

The Ronaldo saga

Since the team finished in sixth place on the Premier League table, Manchester United won’t play in this season’s UEFA Champions League. This caused Cristiano Ronaldo to look for a new team so he could participate in the biggest club competition in the world, but no club made a bid for him due to his high wages and age. Now, he might be staying after all, and hopefully, he can be the top goalscorer again.
