It has been a tough couple of weeks for Manchester United. After the defeats suffered against Brighton and Brentford, which currently have the club sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table after just two matches played, Erik ten Hag, the club’s board, and the fans are all worrying about what the season could bring.

After the Brentford match, where David De Gea made two massive mistakes in the Bees' first two goals out of the four they ended up scoring against United, Erik ten Hag realized that he had a big problem under the sticks with De Gea having confidence problems like he showed this past Saturday afternoon in addition to his lack of skills playing the ball with his feet.

It is being reported by Rob Dawson from ESPN, that the Dutch manager had already identified the goalkeeper situation as a problem during pre-season, but he decided to stick with the Spanish keeper in order to solve other problems in different areas of the pitch. He also didn’t want to make that many changes in his first few months for fear of causing too much disruption in the dressing room.

On the other hand, Dean Henderson was loaned out to Nottingham Forest since the 25-year-old wanted to play regularly every weekend. The English goalie recently told in an interview that he left before the arrival of the new manager because he knew that if he had seen him in training, he would have asked him to stay and compete with De Gea, but he didn’t want to risk missing out of the World Cup.

Next season’s goal

At the moment, Manchester United are looking for a backup goalkeeper that could compete with De Gea after he proved he is not reliable anymore. However, Erik ten Hag and the club expect Dean Henderson to return from his loan next year and play in front of the 31-year-old as he is considered better on the ball by the manager.
