Manchester United defeated Southampton 1-0 away at St Marry’s Stadium in the opening game of matchday four in the Premier League, and continue their good form coming out of last Monday’s win at home against Liverpool. Erik ten Hag has now got his second win in a row in charge of the team after a very tough start of the season.

The new manager decided to repeat the same line-up that got him the result he wanted against Liverpool in their last match. However, the team didn’t quite play as they did on Monday during today’s first half of the game. The first 45 minutes looked like the very first two fixtures with a team that played slowly and without creativity.

Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag must have said something to his players during half-time because the team showed a completely new face in the second half. Just after 10 minutes, a good combination of quick touches between Anthony Elanga, Jadon Sancho, and Diogo Dalot opened up the space for Dalot to make a cross to Bruno Fernandes, who scored a great first-touch goal to open up the score.

Cristiano Ronaldo was subbed-in in the 68th minute when he replaced Jadon Sancho, who didn’t have a good game outside his intervention in Bruno’s goal. The alarms went off for United after Ronaldo looked injured on his right knee, fortunately enough, he carried on playing and finished the match. Casemiro also made his debut after entering the game in the 80th minute.

Job well done

It was really important for Manchester United to get the win away against Southampton, which is always a difficult fixture for any team. After losing the first two games of the season, the Red Devils have now won two matches in a row and looked like they have regained their confidence. The next match will be away at Leicester City on September 1st.
