Just as Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag held a press conference today’s afternoon ahead of the Liverpool fixture on Monday, the Reds coach also spoke to the press before the match. Jurgen Klopp took the opportunity to defend their rivals from all critics they have received ever since the season started.
The German manager remembered what former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor said to talkSPORT last week criticizing ten Hag and his players: “What he said about United on that show, I was close to calling in and telling him ‘You have forgotten completely that you have been a player’. It was unbelievable. If ex-players are going like this, you can imagine how everything else is going”.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss also emphasized the quality Manchester United still have in their player, besides their current form: “They have football quality in midfield, whoever lines up: Eriksen, Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Fred, who Gabby (Agbonlahor) doesn’t like but I think is a really good player, and McTominay, there is real quality there”.
About the news of Anthony Martial returning to training with the rest of his teammates three days before the match against them, Klopp sounded worried: “I’ve heard Martial can play probably. He trained again and can play. He played against us in pre-season, another boy with technique and speed”. The French striker scored against them in a friendly back in July.
The last three times these two English giants have collided, there have been more than four goals per match. Last season, Liverpool beat Manchester United twice in the Premier League with shocking scoreboards: 0-5 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at Anfield. However, during pre-season, Erik ten Hag beat 4-0 in a friendly match.
