Manchester United will face Liverpool tonight on their third fixture of the Premier League season as both teams are looking for their first victory of the campaign. After just two matches played, the Red Devils have conceded six goals and scored zero. For that reason, their manager is thinking of making some adjustments in the defensive back line.
Erik ten Hag has spent the whole week trying to understand what went wrong in the last match when his team lost 4-0 to Brentford. In that game, Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire were the starting partnership at the back, but after conceding four goals in 35 minutes, he decided to take Martinez out and let get Raphael Varane in for the second half.
Erik ten Hag hopes his team performs better for the Liverpool match
Ajax are already looking for Antony’s replacement, despite saying he will stay
With the French defender on the field, the team didn’t concede another goal and looked a lot better in the second 45 minutes. According to MailOnline Sport, Erik ten Hag is considering pairing Lisandro Martínez with Raphael Varane for tonight’s match after the Dutchman worked with this centre-back partnership in training this week.
Now it is being reported by talkSPORT hours before the kick-off that Harry Maguire will potentially be dropped from the starting eleven against Liverpool. If the information is true, then the team’s captain will not start in the biggest game of the season against the club’s fiercest rivals since the manager believes there are other defenders in better form than him.
Despite keeping the club's captaincy after the new manager's arrival, Harry Maguire could not be the undisputed centre-half at Manchester United anymore after Raphael Varane completely recovered form his injury problems from last season and Erik ten Hag's liking of Lisandro Martínez. We will have to wait and see how this is just a one-time thing, or if this will be the new partnership from now on.
