Manchester United have announced the signing of Antony Matheus dos Santos from Ajax. After a long week of negotiations, the Dutch club finally accepted the last offer from the Red Devils of €95 million plus €5m in add-ons, which will likely reach the €100m mark. Antony's contract will be valid until June 2027, with an option to extend it one more year.

After losing the main core of the team that brought them recent success, the current Eredivisie champions weren’t willing to let go of Antony, until the player went on strike and refused to train with the rest of his teammates and gave out an interview with the famous reporter Fabrizio Romano, where he explained his situation forcing them to sell him.

Antony explained that he had told Ajax he wanted to leave back in February, so they could have enough time to find a replacement for him in the transfer window. However, the Amsterdam side offered him a contract extension, which he refused while telling them once again he wanted to leave. Ajax really dragged the whole operation until the last minute.

Erik ten Hag was desperate to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian ever since he was appointed Manchester United manager back in April. He thought the team needed a left-footed right-winger who could cut inside and shoot with his left foot. The Dutch manager also brought out the best of the Brazilian during their time together in Amsterdam, so he knows how to play him. Unfortunately, he won’t be available for the next fixture against Leicester City on Thursday.

The Three “Amigos”

Antony is not the only Ajax player that Erik ten Hag brought with him to this new adventure in his career at Old Trafford. In July the club signed Lisandro Martinez for a fee of around €58  million, and he has become one of the best players in the squad after being named Man Of The Match in his last two games. The two South American players have a great friendship from their past at Ajax and will play together once again.
