Today, Manchester United announced that Lisandro Martinez has been voted by the fans as the club’s Player of the Month of August. This makes him the first player to receive this award after his first month at the club since Daniel James did it in August 2019. For this, Erik ten Hag was asked by the club media for his reaction to this news.

“That tells you the story already. He has fitted in very good to Manchester United and English football, but still, there is a long way to go for everyone. There is still space for improvement, but that is how he is, he is never satisfied and always wants to be better and I hope this nomination will motivate him”, he told the club media.

Just like he did with the newest signing Antony, the Dutch manager really pushed for the club to sign his former Ajax player earlier in the summer until he finally got him. The Argentinian centre-back was signed on July 27th for a fee of around €57 million, and he has become a fan favorite in just one month.

When asked about Lisandro and other defenders celebrating defensive plays, he said that pleases him: “Definitely. First of all, as an individual, it’s a great signal of spirit, but it’s also a signal of cooperation and togetherness about how they act and face situations. That gives me pleasure that the players have joy in such moments and that their decisions together are succeeding”.

Proving him right

Part of Martinez’s personality is the passion and aggressiveness that the shows on the field. He has formed an impressive centre-back partnership with Raphael Varane in the last couple of games where they both look happy playing together. They are constantly talking during the matches and always congratulate each other when they make a block or a challenge.
