Yesterday, news broke out that Manchester United was negotiating with Matheus Cunha's agents in order to sign him, but still had no agreement with Atlético de Madrid for the transfer of the player. This is just the latest transfer target that the club has added to their short-list of strikers that could arrive in Manchester in the next couple of weeks.

Today it was reported by Matteo Moretto from Relevo, that Atleti is currently refusing to negotiate with the Red Devils for the Brazilian centre-forward because they would only let the player go if someone pays for his release clause, which is over €80 million. This could make MUFC walk away from the deal as they were hoping to pay no more than €55m.

Mundo Deportivo’s reporter Javi Gómara, added to the news of Matteo Moretto, that Cunha has told his agents to reject United’s offers as he is still very happy at Madrid despite not being a regular on the starting eleven. Apparently, he wants to stay in the Spain Capital and try to earn a place on Diego Simeone’s team.

Jason Burt from The Daily Telegraph, has also said that the move is now very unlikely to happen after the fee asked by the Spanish team made the Man United’s representatives focus on other targets that are also being pursued by the club. Burt also claims that Erik ten hag’s priority is signing at least two midfielders and just one striker.

Cunha wants to prove his value

The 23-year-old Brazilian arrived in Madrid last summer from Hertha Berlin for a fee of €26 million but didn’t quite make the impact that the Colchoneros were expecting. After 37 matches played, he only managed to score 7 goals and give 6 assists. However, it needs to be said that in the majority of games he started from the bench.
