Patrice Evra, the former Manchester United and Juventus defender, has been sentenced to one year in prison for contempt of court.
The Frenchman has been found guilty of failing to pay child support to his ex-wife, Sandra Evra, and their two children. A French court ruled that Evra owed his former partner nearly a million dollars in back payments.
The 41-year-old has been ordered to pay a further €4,000 in moral damages and €2,200 in legal costs. Evra and his legal team have appealed the ruling, claiming that he has already provided his ex-wife with a substantial financial settlement, including a luxury apartment and a significant sum of money.
However, the court rejected these claims, finding that Evra had failed to meet his financial obligations. The former footballer's lawyers have argued that their client has been unfairly targeted and that the media has played a role in prejudicing the case.
This is not the first time Evra has found himself in legal trouble. In 2019, he was fined for making homophobic comments on social media. The former Manchester United defender has also been involved in a number of high-profile disputes with former teammates and managers.
The conviction is likely to have a significant impact on Evra's reputation. The former France international was once one of the most popular players in the Premier League, but his recent legal troubles have tarnished his image.
