Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has opened up about the harrowing experience he endured following his accusation of racist abuse against Luis Suarez in 2011. In a recent interview for the club's official podcast, Evra detailed the death threats he received and the impact it had on his life.

"After the game, I went to my manager, Alex Ferguson, and told him what had happened," Evra recalled. "I also reported the incident to the referee. The next day, it was all over the newspapers. I had no idea it would become such a big story. I thought I was just doing the right thing by reporting the abuse."

The threats against Evra

Evra continued, "After the story broke, I started receiving death threats. People were saying things like, 'We're in prison, we're Liverpool fans, and we're going to kill you and your family.' For two months, I had security guards following me everywhere I went. They even slept outside my house. It was a really tough time, but I wasn't scared. It was my family who were scared, especially my wife and my brother."

The Frenchman's mounting frustration

The Frenchman expressed his frustration at the criticism he received for speaking out about the incident. "I don't understand why people would blame me for being a victim," he said. "I didn't ask for this to happen. I was just trying to do the right thing."

Evra also revealed that he had forgiven Suarez for the incident. "I've moved on," he said. "I shook his hand after the Champions League final between Juventus and Barcelona. I'm not one to hold grudges."
