For many people is a tabu topic, for others is an advantage, but the diagnostic is always the same: What do the players think? From previous seasons until nowadays, the football matches’ quantity in a year was a problem without solution for national and international federations and associations that never could control or never wanted to take actions on this issue.

Raphael Varane won’t be the last football player who complains against the organizers of the matches and the tournaments. There were a lot of colleges of the French defender who demonstrated their displeasure against, in this case, the Premier League and the Football Association about the resting time for football players.


Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield, qualifiers for international competitions, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Conference League are the tournaments that players point. Nevertheless, calendars are renewed, years go by, and nobody does nothing to solve this problem. 


UEFA, FIFA, national leagues, and national teams, among others, fights for a place in an annual calendar full of tournaments and come with a FIFA World Cup in the middle of the course. Besides, there is a new problem to take account: the FIFA World Club Cup with a new and extend format that include 32 teams and one month competing in 2025.

On his personal Twitter, Varane expressed his point of view about this situation: “We had a meeting last week with the FA. They recommended from the referees new decisions and rules. As a player I feel very privileged to do the job I love every day, but I feel these changes are damaging our game. I believe it is important that we, players and managers, highlight these important issues as we want to protect the game we love and give the fans our best”.
