Erik Ten Hag has had to make a lot of changes during this transfer window, the club is going through a rebuilding process, so the coach has to put the best players available in every game, so several players are left out and although they are not happy with the decision, they know that the club will give them the opportunity to "fight" for a place in the first team squad.
During this pre-season Ten Hag has made many moves to try to find out which players will start the first game of the season against Wolves, for that reason, these preparation games are of vital importance for the coach and for the players who have the opportunity to demonstrate their qualities in order to secure a place in the team.
One of the positions where there has been most doubt about which player will get the starting berth is left-back, as the battle between Aaron Wan Bissaka and Diogo Dalot has continued throughout pre-season, as Ten Hag is still not sure who will be chosen, as both players have done an excellent job when called upon.
Even so, some reports indicate that Wan Bissaka could be the Dutchman's favourite, although nothing is clear yet and with two more warm-up games to go, it should come as no surprise if the Portuguese is relegated to the bench in a lesser role and playing in lesser games.
Despite the fact that his starting place is on the line and it seems that the coach will not consider him for the start of the season, the Portuguese defender reportedly praised his coach during an interview after having a great performance against Borussia Dortmund, in which he scored a goal, Dalot reportedly commented: "He [Ten Hag] has had a very good impact on my career since he arrived. He gives me a lot of confidence. The way he wants to play is the way I want to play football, and that's why it's a pleasure to work with him." So the Portuguese is showing his professionalism and that could ultimately lead to him winning a place in the first-team squad.
