Early this morning, journalist David Ornstein, from ‘The Athletic UK’, reported that Chelsea have opened talks with Barcelona for Frenkie De Jong hoping to strike a deal before Manchester United, who have been trying to sign him since the start of the transfer window. Apparently, the London side are very optimistic about reaching an agreement.

Let’s not forget that Manchester United reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of De Jong in June on a €85m fee. However, the player didn’t want to leave back then, and still wants to stay at Barcelona. United have been waiting for the midfielder to change his mind and sign the contract, as Barça’s board is trying to convince him to leave.

The former Ajax player that Erik Ten Hag wants at Manchester United

Even though Frenkie’s priority is to stay at the Camp Nou, as the club still owns him a part of his salary; he would choose Chelsea over United because ‘The Blues’ will participate in this year’s UEFA Champions League as he wants to play at the highest level of club football. According to ‘Times Sport’ they are the frontrunners to sign him as Barcelona is desperate to sell him as soon as possible.

Even after this sudden stone on the road, ‘The Red Devils’ still hope the Dutchman changes his mind after all his wage situation is solved, so he can reunite with Ten Hag at Old Trafford. It’s worth highlighting that De Jong’s best moment in his career was under Manchester United’s new coach during their time at Ajax where they won everything in their country.

They want to steal Frenkie De Jong

Chelsea doesn’t have the best relationship with Barcelona at this moment, because Xavi’s team have stolen from them Raphinha and Jules Koundé in the last couple of weeks. Maybe this is their way of revenge, but they are still busy closing Marc Cucurella’s deal from Brighton & Hove Albion.
