Manchester United are rarely shy about shelling out a staggering transfer fee, but even the Red Devils surprised when they announced the signing of untested teenage talent Amad in January 2021.
An initial sum of £19 million was paid to Serie A side Atalanta, while the remaining £18 million was to be paid in installments when clauses relating to the bonuses were activated. A quantity unknown to much of the United faithful, few knew exactly what the Red Devils were getting from signing the Ivorian.
Then-coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could barely contain his enthusiasm and spoke at length about Amad before the deal was confirmed, with the Norwegian lyrically speaking about the forward. We've had all the paperwork, I can't see any obstacles. He is coming, Solskjaer told reporters.
I hope you will be with us very soon. I am very excited to bring it. I think he has shown his qualities a few times. Of course he has to learn to play in England, that's a different level of football. We will give him time to develop and express himself.
Well, after two years, it's hard to analyze Amad's turnaround and whether it has been successful. Things started well, with the youngster scoring his first senior goal for the club just two months after Solskjaer's comments, the talent netting a glorious looping header against Italian giants AC Milan in the Europa League knockout phase.
