Erik Ten Hag had hoped to sign striker Harry Kane for this season, however, many factors came together so that United had to look elsewhere if they wanted to sign an attacking player.
One of the reasons for Kane's failure to join United was a lack of openness from Tottenham; with the Red Devils reportedly enquiring about the striker's value, the Spurs let them know he was not for sale and to dry up any attempts to sign him. This came as a surprise because Man Utd were not the only ones interested in the England striker, who had already shown his frustration with the London club after failing to win any silverware in his career.
Another reason has been the mismanagement by the Glazer family, the club's debt is the main motive why they can not spend much money on transfers, this coupled with the 200 million pounds that Tottenham asked for Kane, made it impossible for him to join the club, disappointing many fans.
While rumours have begun to emerge of the alternatives Ten Hag could bring in to accompany Rashford, many of them are players whose value is too high for the club and who, if signed, would leave no room in the budget to fill the gaps in the other positions that the manager would also be looking to strengthen.
Reinforcing the striker position, giving support to Rashford and improving the goalscoring is one of the main focuses that Ten Hag has for this season, however, he will probably not be able to do it with an elite player, for that reason there are other strikers who could do the job well and also at a lower cost, strikers like Mauro Icardi, Mehdi Taremi, Moussa Dembele and Viktor Gyokeres, are just some options that the manager could analyse and decide which is the one that best fits his scheme.
