Manchester United were able to fill one of the positions they had been looking for all summer, the attack was strengthened with the arrival of Rasmus Hojlund who was unveiled on Saturday 5 August, before the penultimate pre-season game, but although Erik Ten Hag was very happy with the signing, the Dane was not the manager's first choice.
Harry Kane's name had been bandied about since the transfer window opened, the Red Devils momentarily feeling confident they could sign one of the best players in the Premier League, with the striker reportedly having given up his interest in leaving Tottenham to join a team that could allow him to win titles, and United had been tipped as one of the favourites.
However, in a bizarre turnaround by Spurs, there were to be obstacles to signing the striker, until the London club demanded that they cease any interest in signing him, which came as a surprise because Kane's contract was up next year and after not wanting to stay with Tottenham, this would be his only chance of making a financial gain from his sale.
So Ten Hag had to find a new option to strengthen the forward line, Rasmus Hojlund became one of the most expensive signings in United's history, worth £72m, but the Dane is unable to start the season due to lower back inflammation, so he may not be available until matchday three.
Harry Kane will be Bayern Munich's new striker for a fee of 100 million euros, the England forward was able to agree personal terms with the Bavarian club, so Ten Hag spoke about it after being asked about United not being able to sign him: "He [Kane] is a great striker, of course, a goalscorer and apart from that, he has all the conditions and skills you want to see in a striker, but we have chosen our striker and we are very happy with our choice."
