Yesterday afternoon, Southampton’s manager Ralph Hasenhüttl held a press conference ahead of his next match against Manchester United this Saturday. The 55-year-old coach took the opportunity and defend his colleague Erik ten Hag after his tough start to the season and expects a really difficult match against the Red Devils.
He understands that is way too soon to criticize Erik ten Hag: “They’re a team with a new manager and after a not very long pre-season where the new manager has to wait and every new player is coming in and having the whole squad available to give your ideas to develop them. It is not surprising that it doesn’t work immediately and everything isn’t perfect”.

The Austrian manager believes that the victory against Liverpool could be a turning for United: “You’re speaking about a top team who are going for titles and can still do that this season. If you beat Liverpool at home it’s a big message to everybody that they’re in a good way. I see a clear identity with what they want to do. After all their pre-season problems, this win was important for them”.
Lastly, he admitted that Casemiro’s arrival has made it more difficult for him to guess how they could lineup: “Sometimes changes are tactical and it makes it difficult to be sure what we are facing. Even if Casemiro is playing, it is not so clear in what way they’ll play. We definitely are facing a strong team and in the end, it is up to us to play the way we want to go”.
Last season, Manchester United and Southampton drew 1-1 in both of their fixtures in the Premier League campaign. However, two seasons ago, the Red Devils defeated the Saints with a shocking 9-0 scoreboard at Old Trafford. Ralph Hasenhüttl has definitely not forgotten about that and will try to take the three points at St Marry’s Stadium.
