Cristiano Ronaldo's contract was mutually terminated by the club just a few days before the World Cup campaign started in Qatar. The decision to let Ronaldo go was believed to be a result of his media interview that sent the club into chaos.
The Portuguese national team captain, started the new season at United under a different manager from his first season after the club decided to start a fresh project. United brought in highly rated Erik Ten Hag from Ajax to take over the helms of affairs at the club.

After the takeover, United's new manager Erik Ten Hag began to implement changes across the club as he quickly started to stamp his authority. The Dutchman brought in a host of new backroom staff to help make the transition process smoother.
Ten Hag promised to give Ronaldo an important role in the team but consistently chose to place him on the bench game after game, which caused their relationship to deteriorate to the point in which Ronaldo conducted a media interview to talk about his situation at the club.
The club subsequently decided to terminate Ronaldo's contract without pay as a means to get back at him for the media interview via finances. But in a shocking twist of events, Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a megadeal worth about 200 million euros with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, which makes him the highest-paid athlete in the world.
