The 26-year-old right-back’s deal was set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season but the club held an option to extend this by a further 12 months, which they have now triggered. The option also gives United more time to review the situation and have conversations about a potential new deal for Wan-Bissaka in the future.
Wan-Bissaka has featured 15 times in all competitions for United this season after missing over a month of action with a hamstring injury. He saw his playing time restricted during the first half of Erik ten Hag’s debut season in charge before establishing himself as a first-team regular in the second half of the campaign, making 34 appearances in all competitions as United won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League.
Wan-Bissaka joined United from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019 in a deal worth £50million. He becomes the latest United player to have a contract extension option activated after the club opted to extend Victor Lindelof’s deal until 2025 in December.
Anthony Martial, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Hannibal Mejbri will also be out of contract in June. As things stand United do not intend to activate the option to extend Martial’s contract, enabling the 28-year-old to leave as a free agent. United also retain an option to extend Mejbri’s contract by a further year but Evans’ and Heaton’s deals do not include such options.
The loan deal of Sofyan Amrabat is due to expire next summer, while United have triggered a break clause to cut short Sergio Reguilon‘s loan move from Tottenham Hotspur. United took care of their more pressing contract situations towards the end of 2022-23 and over the summer with Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford signing long-term deals.
