Despite a successful partnership at Sporting CP, it seems unlikely that Viktor Gyökeres will be reunited with his former manager, Rubén Amorim, at Manchester United.
Amorim, who joined United earlier this season, had been keen on bringing his former striker to Old Trafford. Gyökeres, who has been in impressive form for Sporting, would have been a valuable addition to United's attacking options. However, a number of factors have made a reunion between the pair unlikely.
One of the primary reasons for the breakdown in talks is the Swedish striker's wage demands. Gyökeres is reportedly seeking a significant pay rise, which would make him one of the highest-paid players at the club. With Manchester United looking to trim their wage bill, they are unlikely to meet his demands.
Additionally, Gyökeres is approaching his 27th birthday, which is outside of the club's usual transfer policy. Manchester United have been focusing on signing young, up-and-coming talent in recent years, and a move for Gyökeres would represent a departure from this strategy.
Another factor that could be deterring Gyökeres from a move to Old Trafford is the club's current standing in the Premier League. United are currently struggling to qualify for the Champions League, which is a major ambition for any top player. Gyökeres, who has his sights set on playing in Europe's elite competition, may be reluctant to join a club that cannot guarantee him Champions League football.
While a reunion between Amorim and Gyökeres would have been exciting for United fans, it seems increasingly unlikely to happen. The club's financial constraints, coupled with Gyökeres' wage demands and desire to play in the Champions League, make a deal difficult to complete.
With the Gyökeres deal looking increasingly unlikely, Manchester United will have to turn their attention to other targets. The club has been linked with a number of young strikers in recent weeks, and it is expected that they will make a move for at least one of them in the summer transfer window.
As for Gyökeres, he will continue to be one of the most sought-after strikers in European football. With his contract set to expire in 2025, he will have plenty of suitors if he decides to leave Sporting CP.
