Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez's rise to prominence as one of the world's top goalkeepers has been met with both acclaim and scrutiny. Now, Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has added fuel to the fire, claiming that the Argentine is not even among the top 10 keepers in the world.
Speaking to Goal, Van der Sar was asked to compare Martínez with other top goalkeepers. He opted for Alisson Becker of Liverpool, and then added Thibaut Courtois and Manuel Neuer. When it came to Martínez, the Dutchman was dismissive, stating: "I don't think Martínez is in the top 10 of the best goalkeepers in the world currently. For penalties, yes, for sure. But he is in the top 20."
Martínez's credentials speak for themselves. He was a key figure in Argentina's World Cup triumph in 2022, and his penalty-saving heroics were crucial in their victory. He has also won the Yashin Trophy and The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper award.
Edwin van der Sar is a legend of the game, having enjoyed a stellar career with Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, and Manchester United. He won numerous trophies, including the Champions League, and was capped 135 times by the Netherlands.
Van der Sar's comments have sparked a lively debate among football fans. Some agree with his assessment, while others believe that Martínez's achievements warrant greater recognition.
Van der Sar's comments about Martínez have created a talking point in the football world. Whether you agree with him or not, there is no denying that Martínez is a top-class goalkeeper who has achieved great things in his career.
