Financial struggles have become a huge part of football in the modern day, especially since COVID where many teams were negatively impacted by the pandemic with their books. The loss of matchday revenue was a massive killer, as it is a massive source of income for clubs, especially the clubs with the big stadiums that sit over 50 thousand. One club that has faced serious financial trouble is Manchester United.

Before the Glazers came to Manchester United, United were the first self-sustainable club in the league which meant they did not require funding from the owners to survive. The constant success and the growth on the global scale commercially led to United becoming one of the richest clubs in the world. Enter the Glazer family. From the moment the Glazers walked into Manchester United, it felt off as they seized the club in immoral ways and added debt to the club through the takeover. The club had no debt whatsoever, but now had hundreds of millions of debts for no reason.

United were able to sustain their success under the Glazers in the short term but that was because of the presence of Sir Alex Ferguson. When Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, it was like a mask being ripped off the face of the club. How would United survive without Fergie. The last decade has shown that they cannot survive without him. The club have thrown money in the transfer market in the hopes of it being a solution for the squad but that hasn’t been the case.

That method of spending huge amounts of money led to signings like Angel Di Maria, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Fred, and many more. Now in football there are two ways of paying off the transfer fee you owe. You can either pay a huge lump of it up front, or you can pay in installments to help balance the books out in the short term. In the past United used to pay up front and even did it with Harry Maguire and his 80-million-pound fee.
