When we think of Bruno Fernandes, images of a midfield maestro, dictating the play and scoring spectacular goals, come to mind. However, few are aware of the rather unconventional path the Portuguese midfielder took to reach the pinnacle of English football. Before he became a Premier League sensation, Fernandes began his career in a position that might surprise many: as a central defender.
Fernandes' footballing journey began at a local club called Infesta, where he initially honed his skills in a defensive role. The young Portuguese displayed a natural aptitude for the game, but it was in the heart of defense where he first made his mark. His strong physique, combined with a keen reading of the game, made him a formidable presence at the back.
A turning point in Fernandes' career came when he was 15 years old. A loan move to a Lisbon-based club, Pasteleria, provided him with an opportunity to showcase his talents in a more advanced position. The team was in need of a creative midfielder, and Fernandes' coach, Antonio Peres, saw something special in the young player. Peres decided to deploy Fernandes in a more attacking role, allowing him to express his creativity and flair.
The move to midfield proved to be a masterstroke. Fernandes thrived in his new role, showcasing his excellent passing range, vision, and ability to score goals. It quickly became apparent that he had a natural talent for attacking midfield, and he never looked back.
Since his breakthrough at Sporting CP, Fernandes has gone from strength to strength. His performances in Portugal caught the eye of Manchester United, who signed him in January 2020. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Fernandes has become one of the most influential players in the Premier League, consistently delivering world-class performances.
Fernandes' early experiences as a defender have undoubtedly shaped him into the complete midfielder he is today. His defensive awareness and ability to read the game are still evident in his play, even though he operates primarily in an attacking role.
