Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been banned from driving for 56 days after pleading guilty to two speeding offences. The 31-year-old was caught on camera driving his Range Rover at 85mph in a 50mph zone on Wilmslow Road, near Manchester Airport, on March 5, 2024.
Bolton Magistrates' Court heard that Maguire, who is the registered keeper of the vehicle, admitted to being the driver. The court was told that he had three penalty points on his licence at the time of the offence, relating to an offence on March 16, 2021.
Just two days after the first incident, on March 7, 2024, Maguire was again caught speeding and has since received three further penalty points.
Maguire did not attend the sentencing hearing but his lawyer, Gwyn Lewis, said: "The speed is of course excessive and I fully accept that." Mr Lewis added that Maguire was "a person of means" and could pay a fine within 28 days.
While Maguire was unable to attend a speed awareness course due to being out of the country, the court decided to exercise its discretion and impose a shorter ban.
Chairman of the bench, Mark Hardman, said: "We are prepared to exercise our discretion due to the fact that Mr Maguire was out of the country and unable to participate in his speed awareness course."
Maguire was banned from driving for 56 days and fined £666, as well as being ordered to pay £120 costs with a victim surcharge of £266.
The driving ban comes at a challenging time for Maguire, who has faced criticism for his performances on the pitch. The Manchester United captain recently lost his place in the starting XI and has been linked with a move away from the club.
